The extraction of mined substances from mines has punctuated France’s cultural and economic history for more than two millennia. The working of coal, bauxite, potash... and of metals: lead, zinc, iron, gold... has left its mark. Many regions recount their past, highlighting that uniquely human inherited dimension that reveals them more clearly, preserving the memory of great human adventures of yore and opening the road to tomorrow.
The interactive map shown below situates a number of former mine sites that benefit from heritage enhancement. The map represents a small contribution to the important effort of remembrance devoted to the nation’s mining heritage.
