Southern France Regional Post-mining Unit (UTAM South)

Introductory paragraph

The BRGM’s Regional Post-mining Unit for southern France (UTAM-Sud), based at Gardanne (Bouches-du-Rhône département), covers the Aquitaine, Corsica, Languedoc-Roussillon, Midi-Pyrénées, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and Rhône-Alpes regions.

The Regional Post-mining Unit for southern France (UTAM-Sud) covers six regions (34 départements) and a total area of nearly 198 000 km2, extending from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic and including Corsica.

It is responsible for monitoring 136 mine workings, including water treatment stations, outflows, mine dumps and facilities listed for environmental protection  (ICPE), and for safety work in abandoned mining sites.

Besides numerous coal mines, most of these are numerous small-scale ore extraction sites (iron, lead, copper, silver, zinc and other minerals) along the southern edge of the Cévennes and Montagne Noire ranges and in mountain areas in the Alps, Pyrenees and Corsica.
